15 COLONIAL SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT ABORIGINES AND FISHERIES 95/12 UNDER SECRETARY Several half-castes, whose names appear attached to a letter to the Hon. the Minister (page 1), have applied for certificates of exemption from the operations of the Aborigines Act, 1905. I have made careful enquiries from all quarters about the wisdom of granting the applications, and the Police, acting under instructions from the District Police Officer of two districts, have re- ported that the granting of exemptions would be against the interests of the applicants, and would undoubtedly be abused in the direction of supplying aborigines with liquor, which would be against the public peace, and a source of annoyance to many Europeans living in the vicinity where natives are camped. In view of reports received, I cannot recommend that certificates of exemption be granted. C. Yg CHIEF PROTECTOR OF ABORIGINES. 5/3/12 ____________________ I concur in CPA's recommendations I know most of the applicants & it will be calamitous to grant the exemptions desired. 7:3:12 Approved COLONIAL SECRETERY JMP Stamp: (ABORIGINES AND FISHERIES DEPARTMENT - 5 MAR 1912)
