MATRONS AND OFFICERS IN CHARGE OF GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS Under the Nurses Award, it is necessary for a nurse to provide her own uniforms for the first six months of her employment. After that the Award provides that the Department shall supply nurses with all future uniforms required during her period of service with the Department. When nurses are engaged they are not signed on for any particular period, but may terminate their engagement with us at any time, and in view of this the Department discussed with the Union a proposal to make cash payments to nurses in lieu of supplying uniforms. The Union has agreed to this and the Department will pay nurses at the rate of 2s. per week during the period it is necessary for the Department to provide uniforms under the Award. In order that payments may be made to nurses when due, it is desired that you should notify us as follows -- (a.) New Nurses (that is nurses of recent engagement who are required to provide their own uniforms for the first six months of their employment) - the date of completion of six months' service, during which period the Department is not supplying uniforms. (b.) Nurses who have been sometime in our employment and have been receiving uniforms from the Department - the date that the uniforms provided need replacing. Will Matrons please notify the Department from time to time as may be necessary? The payment of 2s. per week applies to Nurses and Sisters. In regard to Matron, the same arrangement will apply, but the rate of payment will be 2/4d. per week. F.J. HUELIN UNDER SECRETARY.
